New Semester

New Semester Hi! So I disappeared for a bit last semester on the interwebs, but one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to get back to doing one of the things I absolutely love to do: Blogging. I love sharing my stories, dreams and struggles in the hopes that someone will benefit from my sharing, and I hope you enjoy reading about them :) Thus, I decided to write a “what’s happening this semester” post and explain what’s new for this year. Pistol First of all, I JOINED THE PISTOL TEAM! (Photo Credit: Pistol Instructor Michael Conti) My friend Nico F. ’16 knew that I was really interested after I took the beginner pistol physical education class during first semester, and he got me a tryout! I had my first competition the first week that I joined the team, and I did quite terrible. But I’m improving so much!! I can get almost every shot in the black area of a target, and it is such a great form of relaxation. Strange, huh? The reason why it’s relaxing is because it’s so focused on clearing your mind of everything else that exists and just focusing on the moment and your breathing. MIT students are some of the best shooters in the country because we have such great concentration skills. We used to be a varsity sport at MIT, one of the best teams ever. But, due to budget cuts of many important varsity sports and teams, the MIT Pistol Team is now student-run and our coaches are all volunteer alums of MIT! The volunteer coaches are so great, and they have helped me so much with improving over time. I went to our first away match of the semester on the 2nd and 3rd of February, and I had almost a 60 point increase from my last match, coming just 8 points away from qualifying to move from air pistol to ’22 caliber pistols! This really meant a lot to me, and I can’t wait to spend the next year on the team! The competition was at West Point Military Academy, and we competed against the Army, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, and Yale. The Academy had an amazing electronic air pistol range, with black tape that rolled down after each shot! Im really excited for sectionals this weekend, and I know that well do awesome. Caving At the beginning of last semester, something terrible happened â€" I started running. Why is this so terrible? I was not used to running at all, let alone 5 miles at least once every day for four weeks. I started to feel pain in my foot, and I eventually couldn’t walk anymore. I went to MIT medical for three days, deciding that the wait was too long for the first two days and then waiting for hours on the third day to see doctors once the pain got really bad. I had a stress fracture in my foot, and I was stuck in a boot for the whole semester. Luckily, I’m all healed now! I stayed away from all foot-using activities and kept my boot on, and now I can run and more importantly, go exploring. I decided to go on a caving adventure to Bentley’s Cave in New York led by Becca G. ’14. It was beautiful there! I got all dressed up in my wet suit and multiple layers, and got really muddy! It was so much fun, and I really am looking forward to the next caving adventure I get the chance to go on! Medlinks Now that I have been a Medlink for a full semester, I really want to get more involved! I like being available for my friends and helping them out when they don’t feel well, and I can’t wait to eventually become an EMT. We had our beginning of the semester meeting on reg day (the last day to register for classes), and we got masks and antiseptic stuff to hand out to hall! I’m also planning on putting post-its on the mirrors that say inspirational things for Valentine’s Day as a part of Operation Post-It, and I’m so excited to make people happy! UROP I GOT A UROP AND IT’S SO COOL!! I got this awesome UROP (undergraduate research opportunity) in chemical engineering!! I still think that I want to study materials science, but chemical engineering research is so interesting!! The graduate student that I am working with is a third year PhD student working on the continuous manufacturing of pharmaceutical drugs on polymer surfaces. We are going to work on making an efficient production system of crystallizing the pharmaceutical drugs on the surfaces of the polymers by increasing the surface area of the polymers and through other methods. The equipment in the Trout and Myerson labs is so incredible, and I am so excited to learn all about the research and equipment. Snow We had a huge blizzard in honor of the start of the new semester!! His name was Nemo, and he was beautiful. (See posts by: Connie H. 15, Michael C. 16, and Jenny X. 13).  There was fun to be had by all, including my mother and sister who came to visit me for the first time just in time for the blizzard.  They got to spend some quality time with the cats on hall and we got to make tons of food! Here are some  pictures I took of the snow and the amazing snow battle that my hall won in Killian last Saturday. Many of these pictures display the pi rhos, victorious after a vicious battle Classes Last semester, I didn’t do as well as I had hoped in my classes. Thankfully, I was able to pass all of my classes (18.01A Single Variable Calculus, 18.02A Multivariable Calculus, 8.01L Physics, 7.012 Biology, 3.091 Solid-State Chemistry, 12.000 Terrascope), but I didn’t get to put in as much time and effort as I would have liked into each one. I honestly regret taking all science and math courses instead of taking a HASS (Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences) class as recommended for first semester, since it really was an incredibly difficult and draining semester and IAP. Therefore, I decided to only take four classes this semester, one of which is a 9-unit class and two of which are HASS classes. Last semester, I didn’t take a CI-H, which is a required communication intensive humanities writing class that all freshman must take during their first year at MIT. I placed out of the CI-W requirement because I did well in AP English Language, but I don’t know if my writing is strong enough to do well in my CI-H class, which is 24.06, or Bioethics. The class looks extraordinarily interesting though, which will definitely help me do well in the class. In addition to 24.06, I am taking 18.03, or differential equations, and 8.02, or Physics (electricity and magnetism). I am also taking 3.094, which is a really awesome 9-unit class about archaeology and the human experience. We get to work in the forge, and a bunch of my friends are in the class!! New Semester Last semester, I was really frightened. I was so excited to have found my home here at MIT and make some of my best friends in the world, but MIT is just so difficult and I was constantly afraid and aware that I was not smart enough, not good enough, and not hardcore enough for MIT. I now look back at the first semester and realize that I am MIT enough; it’s just that I wasn’t doing it right. I think I’m on a good track right now, and I am grateful to have the learning experience of last semester behind me. I’m ready for the second half of my freshman year. Also, cat:

It is said that culture is the way of life a group of people follow, meaning their behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that identify them as where they came from, who they are, and who they can become. On the other hand, we know that culture is always changing and adapting to the lifestyle and advances of the present day. This can happen by the adaptation groups of people have suffered in order to achieve a better way of living other than the one they’ve previously had. A movement in which many African Americans moved to the North to work and settle in the steel mills in search of a better life. For this assignment I am going to explain how differences in race can affect the treatment and experience a person can receive within the criminal justice system. I will use research, legislation, policy and statistics to help answer the question. I will look into the different Criminal Justice Systems and analyse how race affects a persons treatment, I will also backup my findings through case studies which show the differences. Racism and race differences can occur within the police force, courts, probation and prisons. Because of race differences people from ethnic minorities are treated differently and unfairly in each of the Criminal Justice Systems. A racist incident is any incident which is perceived to be racist by the victim or any other person. (HMPS, 2007). The first part of the Criminal Justice System where an offender experiences race differences is the police force. The police have been known to be institutionally racist, In the criminal justice system it has become apparent that different ethnic groups are treated unequally, a recent report called Race and the Criminal Justice System showed that members of the Black community are seven times more likely to be stopped and searched, three and a half times more likely to be arrested, and five times more likely to be in prison then members of the White community, the same report also shows that Black communities are over represented and there is an under representation for Asian communities(Justice, 2007) . After the Brixton riots in 1981 lord Scarman produced a report into the factors causing the riots. The report showed that different factors such as political, social and economic factors created the trigger for the protest. After the riots confidence and mistrust in the police and th eir methods were lost, before the protest there was no communication or liaison between the police or the community. The report outlined that necessary changes such as more ethnic minority officers needed to be employed and more training needed to be given. The report highlighted that institutional racism did not occur but there was racial discrimination and racial disadvantage towards the black community (BBC, 2004). Since the Macpherson report the Equality and Human rights commission presented a report as to whether there had been changes in the police force in terms of racial discrimination and equality. The first part of the report looked into employment, Statistics show that 8% of the total police force is made up of ethnic minorities, in all the different statistics there has been a steadily but slow increase in ethnic minorities, however it does also show that ethnic minority officers have a high resignation rate, especially within the first 6 months of service (Justice, 2007 ). Many police officers that deal with counter terrorism, firearms and robbery consist mainly of white middle aged men who discriminate against Blacks and Asians, many Asians and Black officers have difficulty getting into the specialist squads, and feel as if it a closed shop for ethnic minorities. The second part of the report looked into stop and search, black members were seven times more likely to be stopped and searched by the police, and from the seven, only one was worthy enough for an arrest (Justice, 2007), this shows that there is still a disproportionate figure and that unnecessarily they were being searched, this particular problem is common in police forces across the UK. For every 1000 Black people in England, there was an average of 102 stops for drug searches, the Metropolitan police carried out 75% of searches on Black people (Justice, 2007) , Since the July 7 bombings, there was an increase in the number of Asians being stopped and searched. All statistics that ar e used for stop and search have a higher figure of minority ethnics, this shows that ethnic minorities are treated unfairly and are more likely to be searched then white people, this manner of stopping and searching on suspicion is being used excessively against Black and Asians. Members of the Black community are being regularly stopped for weapons such as knives and guns, and members of the Asian community are being stopped for terrorist related charges, both Black and Asian communities experience race differences through this. Race patterns are also frequent within the fingerprint and DNA samples, 40% of all black males are on the system, compared with 13% of Asians and 9% of whites (Justice, 2007). DNA samples of Black members are kept regardless of whether the person has committed a crime or not, this stereotypes towards Black men because they are always prime suspects in certain crimes because of their high figures of samples. Racial incidents was another factor the report loo ked into, since the Stephen Lawrence case there have been many improvements into the way race crime is dealt, police officers are being trained in culture and diversity and are now taking into account how serious race crimes are, and how serious they can become if they are not dealt with as soon as possible. In areas such as recruitment, training and tackling race crime, the police force is making clear progress, the statistics also back this up and there are many examples which show this also. However there are still issues and concerns that have been ignored such as the DNA database and stop and search differences, and mainly that black members are mostly seen as suspects in all crimes. Once a defendant has been charged, the police then seek charging advice from the CPS, the Crown Prosecution Service then decides what charge or sentence the defendant should receive. The courts take many factors into consideration before making a decision, firstly they look at the nature of the offence, the plea, the offenders previous criminal history, mitigating or aggravating circumstances. A study showed that Black defendants were more likely to be sentenced to custody then White defendants, and Asian defendants were less likely to be sentenced, the study also showed that Black and Asian offenders were given considerably larger sentences then White offenders. In other sentences such as fines and conditional discharges, Black offenders were more likely to be fined and less likely to be discharged compared to White offenders and also both Black and Asian offenders were more likely to receive community sentence then white offenders (Sharp, 2005). A black magistrate claimed that blac k defendants received harsh remarks, severe sentencing, disregard for personal mitigation, easy findings of guilt irrespective of evidence, most likely to refuse bail, most likely to be sentenced to prison and general unfair practices (Bird, 2009). From this we can see that people from ethnic minorities are treated unfairly and they often experience a difference in sentencing from the CPS An offender can be sentenced to attend probation by the CPS, the probation supervises the offenders behaviour and produces a report, the report is essential in the courts deciding the sentence. A recent report carried out on the probation service revealed that the probation service was infected by racism (Travis, 2000). The home office minister stated that There has been a systematic failure to address issues of race and racial discrimination in an adequate but appropriate way(Travis, 2000) The report outlined that white officers were uncomfortable when dealing with black offenders, they feared accusations of being racist, the report also showed that pre sentence reports for ethnic minorities had been of a poorer quality than those of the white offenders, these reports are very crucial in determining what the courts decide in what sentence to pass, if the probation officer writes a poor report because of the offenders ethnic background this could lead them to getting a severe punishm ent, that they do not deserve. Another reason why ethnic minority offenders are getting harsher penalties then white offenders could be down to the quality of the pre sentence report. The final part of the criminal justice system where an offender can receive different type of treatment is the prisons. In the past ten years the number of ethnic minority prisoners has increased considerably, ethnic minority prisoners needs are not always met and they are not given an equal amount of support as other prisoners, ethnic minority prisoners are frequently treated with disrespect and often receive racial abuse. The commission for racial equality made a report into racial discrimination in the prisons, after the murder of Zahid Mubarek who was murdered in HMYOI Feltham and was believed to be racially motivated. Statistics show that racial incidents are on the increase, during 2006-2008 there was increase of 25% of complaints of racism, staff on prisoner racism increased by 13% (Guardian, 2010). Racial stereotyping is a main factor in prisons, black inmates were more likely to be targeted for drugs testing then white cellmates, and that locking a prisoner in a cell for pun ishment was used unreasonably towards ethnic minority prisoners (BBC, 2003). Labelling theory was developed by Howard Becker in 1963, it is known as the theory of deviance that views deviance as a label given to behaviours or attitudes by figures of influence, and this means that a person or an action is not deviant unless made by society. This theory relates to race and the criminal justice system because many people from all different races can carry out the same crime but only certain races are given a label or called deviant. This theory can be used for examples such as all black people deal in drugs and that youth in hoodies have ASBOs, although drug dealers can be from any background, society, police and people in authority in general have stereotyped drug dealers as being from black communities.(Miller, 2009). Edgar Degas was both a man and an artist of contradictions. The French artist, paint err, and sculptor Edgar Degas was born on July 19, 1834 in Paris, France. Degas died September 27, 1917 in Paris, France. Degas is associated historically with the Impressionists because of his concentration on scenes of contemporary life and he never painted outdoors and rarely depicted landscape and also his desire to capture the transitory moment. Degas surpassed other impressionists in compositional sense; his use of vibrant expressive color became his primary concern in his late works. Degas was one of the first to understand and creatively use the new pictorial possibilities offered by photography and Japanese prints. With that being said, in describing the physical characteristics of one of Degas’s most famous still life paintings, was titled â€Å"Woman with Chrysanthemums†, painted in the year 1865. The medium used was oil on canvas and the scale was 29†x 361/2†. The subject is a female figure depicted sitting at the right side of a table with a bouquet of flowers in the center and also a glass pitcher of water with gloves placed beside the glass pitcher. The painting is objective, and it is because the huge bouquet of flowers opens the viewer’s eye and draws one into the still life painting dominating almost overshadowing the figure. As an artist Degas utilized several major elements of art in his still life famous painting, â€Å"Woman with Chrysanthemums†, therefore, one of the major elements utilized was use Lines. Degas utilized lines in his painting of the table and the open window at the right side of the painting. A second element of art utilized in this painting was the use Color. Degas uses bright spots of color in the bouquet, yellow, red, and specifically white, mostly the general coloring of the painting was subdued, with shades of brown being the predominate coloring. Degas utilized a third element of art being Space. Degas captured the look of Japanese prints and influenced Degas’s painting, as Japanese also is the shallowness of the space, accented by the flowered wallpaper to the left of the picture. A fourth major element utilized in Degas’s â€Å"Woman with Chrysanthemums† described is use Mass. The artist utilized mass with the fullness of the massive bouquet of flowers. Degas utilized the element of texture brilliantly in his rendering of the colorful bouquet of mums. In describing how Degas organized the elements with the principles of design, firstly, unity and variety is utilized with the consistency of color throughout the painting. The mass bouquet of flowers dominates the center, the flowered wall paper behind the table and the flowers that are seen through the open window on the right of the painting. Utilizing another one of the elements of art and principles of design, Degas utilized Balance in this particular painting. Degas placed the woman figure at the far right where she occupies less than a third of the composition, her body cut in half by the picture’s edge. The mass of flowers dominates the center, and the glass pitcher and the lady’s gloves casually tossed on the table, help to balance the composition, which in turn acts as a visual foil to the figure. Emphasis is utilized in the painting as Degas captured the visual appearance, an impression of the inner mood of the woman staring off in to space, her cheek resting on her hand, looking as though she is lost in reflection and unaware of the encroaching bouquet of Chrysanthemums. Directional Forces utilized are using the implied lines for the viewer’s eye to follow the beautiful colors throughout the painting. Also, another way the artist utilized elements with the principles would be through Contrast. The difference between the artist’s use of light and dark throughout his painting. In describing how Degas organized the elements with the principles of design, Repetition and Rhythm with the vivid colors of the flowers flow through and gives the composition unity. Moving along describing the organized elements with the principles of design, scale and proportion, in which the figure of the woman compared to the enormous still life. Degas was influenced by the Impressionist during his time, and also he had formed some friendships. Most importantly Edgar Degas was highly influenced by the Japanese prints and photography. He also carried over the Japanese influence and used the symbolic flower of Japan, once known as The Land of Chrysanthemums in his paintings. Furthermore, Degas created many daring compositional innovations. His study of Japanese prints led him to experiment with unusual visual lines and asymmetrical compositions. His subjects would often seem cropped at the edges, or seemed to appear to be accidental cutoff views and off-centered subjects, as in Woman with Chrysanthemums. Moreover, Degas’s content and meaning of the selection was the woman in the painting staring off into space, her cheek resting on her hand, lost in deep thought unaware of the dominating bouquet of Chrysanthemums. In conclusion, Edgar Degas’s painting of â€Å"Woman with Chrysanthemums† was chosen because of its unusual and unique composition. Also, the unusually unbalanced painting made curiosity prevail. The asymmetrical principle of design and accidental cutoff views were intriguing as to why Edgar Degas painted as he once did long ago. Personally liking Chrysanthemums and beautiful bouquets of flowers made the painting easy to choose for the essay. Edgar Degas truly was both a man and an artist of contradictions.
